Course Description:
Students will use creativity and Lego Mindstorms EV3 robotics kits to design and build robots.
Students will use the design process and problem solving strategies to test and redesign robots while persevering through challenges.
Students will program robots via Lego's software, or other languages such as Python if desired.
Students will work together in small teams of 2 or 3 students.
Students will have opportunity to learn the science and history behind motors, gears, and sensors.
Essential Questions:
How could we use robotics to create positive change?
What skills and resources are required to design and build robots?
How can we construct a robot?
How can we control a robot’s behavior?
Classroom Expectations:
Respectful
- Materials
- Other students
- Self
Responsible
- Complete activities with group
- Inventory/track materials.
*Inventory list included with each box. If students lose a part, they need document it
immediately with the teacher.
Safe
- Physically
- Ideas
Students will receive a warning. Repeated behavior will lead to contacting school administration and parents.
Homework
Class time will be provided for all required work. Students can choose to work on programming or research ideas and designs at home. The class will have one oral presentation that can be developed and practiced at home.
Grading
The robotics part of the course is graded with 500 points to make 50% of the grade.
A = >93% A- = 90-93% B+ = 87-90% B = 83-87% B- = 80-83%
C+ = 77-80% C = 73-77% C- = 70-73% D+ = 66%-70% D = 60-66% F = <60%
Participation 13%
10pts x 13 weeks = 130pts
Each week you will fill out a participation evaluation form.
Design Plans 20%
50pts x 4 plans = 200pts
You will complete a design plan for each of the five robots.
Oral Presentation 5%
50pts
You will complete a three to five minute presentation on a teacher-approved aspect of robotics.
Reading Quizzes 12%
40pts x 3 quizzes = 120pts
We will read several short stories in class. If we complete more than three stories the rest will be extra credit!!!
